  2. In the test of the contrast and 
  3. assimilation theory of the 
  4. corridor illusion, the cylinders 
  5. appear to be only slightly 
  6. different in size.
  7.  
  8. To test this hypothesis, we can 
  9. eliminate the overall 
  10. perspective, as shown in the 
  11. illustration to the left, and 
  12. simply embed each cylinder in 
  13. the appropriate frame of 
  14. reference--that is, in a frame 
  15. that is equal in size to the 
  16. projected size of the corridor 
  17. adjacent to each cylinder.  As 
  18. can readily be seen, the 
  19. illusory effect is much 
  20. diminished in comparison with 
  21. the original figure or is not 
  22. present at all. Whatever 
  23. illusory effect remains cannot 
  24. be attributed to perspective 
  25. depth processing.
