In the test of the contrast and
assimilation theory of the
corridor illusion, the cylinders
appear to be only slightly
different in size.
To test this hypothesis, we can
eliminate the overall
perspective, as shown in the
illustration to the left, and
simply embed each cylinder in
the appropriate frame of
reference--that is, in a frame
that is equal in size to the
projected size of the corridor
adjacent to each cylinder. As
can readily be seen, the
illusory effect is much
diminished in comparison with
the original figure or is not
present at all. Whatever
illusory effect remains cannot
be attributed to perspective
depth processing.
